Updated for the week of June 11, 2021
MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Hi Everyone,

I first want to thank you for your ongoing support that we have received from so many of you during this pandemic. We are so looking forward to the improvements that we are seeing as a result of the increased immunization across the province.

Effective June 9, regardless of the resident / visitor / essential caregivers vaccination status, brief hugs can finally take place!
Masks Required: If you do not live at JMPC, you must have a medical mask on at all times while on the property. It really is exhausting to have to repeat this over and over again to individuals choosing not to keep their mask on. Holding a water bottle in your hands for the duration of your visit does not preclude you from wearing a mask because you are “taking a drink”. Please, I am asking you to adhere to this public safety measure.  The Ministry requires this policy for all of us to follow. For essential caregivers and visitors on the property, there is no smoking permitted in our smoking area outside of the front entrance as this would require you to take off your mask.
Essential Caregivers: In recognizing that things continue to improve and understanding that a gradual approach is best, we are making some improvements for essential caregivers who enter the Home effective immediately. If, upon entering the Home area, you do not see the person you have come to spend time with, please go to the residents room as usual, ring the call bell and the staff will get the resident for you. However, if, upon entering the resident home area, you can see the resident you are here to spend time with, you are welcome to go and get them, and take them to your destination. (meaning a balcony, patio or residents room) Please note, the dining room should not be entered during meal time as this is very disturbing to other residents, and staff are carrying hot items etc. At the end of your time at the Home, should you wish to take the person you are spending time with to the lounge, or to their table prior to the meal starting, you are welcome to do this.

Going Outside: We are trying to reduce the congestion and wait time at the front entrance for everyone’s safety. Moving forward, our preference for Essential caregivers who are taking their person out of the building, is for you to utilize the chapel door to exit and re-enter. There is a keypad (1234*) there, sunscreen, ice water and wide brimmed hats at this exit as well. Hopefully this will improve everyone’s comfort level at the screening station. If you are leaving the Home for the day, we ask that you exit through the screening area as usual.

Ministry Changes: The ministry has confirmed that there will not be any upcoming changes past what has already been shared at this time related to LTC and the entering to Stage 1 of the reopening plan. Essential Caregivers can still only come in the Home one at a time as per the Ministry.

Vaccination Status: I would like to remind you to take a picture of your vaccination (1st and 2nd dose) completion form to confirm your vaccination status and send it to your manager contact as soon as possible. Alternatively, you can drop it off at reception and we will take a copy of it for our files.

Absences: Please be sure to review the absences section later in this newsletter.

If this is your first time reading our newsletter, I would encourage you to go to this link where you will find the previous newsletters should you wish to view them. Should you ever not want to receive these newsletters, please follow the prompts on the newsletter at the bottom to unsubscribe. Also, if you ever feel that you would prefer to not have a picture of your loved one included in our Family Newsletter, please reach out to Bobbie-Joe at bblackburn@lennox-addington.on.ca or by calling at ext 7224.

Director
Question of the Day
Why are you only allowing fully immunized residents to go on short term and temporary absences?

The ministry has not mandated immunization for any residents, staff or caregivers and aims to provide all individuals, regardless of immunization status, the ability to socialize with loved ones. The Ministry is taking a cautious approach to modifying restrictions in homes based on an assessment of risk factors, including immunization status. As the pandemic continues to evolve public health conditions improve, we anticipate that the Ministry will be making additional changes to further ease restrictions including for both vaccinated and unvaccinated residents.

COVID-19 Testing for Essential Caregivers
You are required to have 2 COVID tests each week.

You will need your regular COVID swab that you have at a COVID Assessment Centre which you will need to have at some point between Wednesday and Sunday each week. (please do not have your tests on back to back days)
The second swab is the Rapid Antigen Test which will be done at JMPC in our tea room. We will be offering this test on Monday’s, Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s at the times listed below:

10:00am – 7:00pm each day

NOTE: Shift Change will result in delays for non-staff.
Shift change that occurs during testing times are 2:30 and 6:30pm

Exception: If you visit only once per week then you only require the one weekly COVID swab from the COVID Assessment Centre.

The Rapid Antigen Test must be done here at JMPC and will take place in the tea room area. Staff will provide you direction at the time. This test is strictly a surveillance screening test for those who present without symptoms. It is viewed as an addition to the screening tool process.

Should an individual test positive using this Rapid Antigen test, you would need to have a PCR test completed at the Assessment Center to confirm the positive diagnosis.
Perishable Items: Food being brought in for a resident must be in a container that can be wiped down with our wipes and they will then be delivered to your resident right away.

All other items will be kept for 24 hours prior to being taken to the resident.

Absences from the Home
Ontario has now entered Step One of the Roadmap to Reopen.

On June 9, the reduced restrictions began, especially for residents who are fully vaccinated. The term “Fully Vaccinated” means both vaccine shots plus 2 weeks following the last dose.

Effective June 9 the following absences are permitted for fully vaccinated residents:

  • Short Term Outings – Leaving the property for social or other reason but not overnight. (applies only to fully vaccinated residents) This does not need to be booked or approved. However, it is important to note that if the resident is going out with a non-essential caregiver, we will require you to reach out to the charge nurse on the residents floor to arrange a pick up time.  Anyone picking up the resident must come into the vestibule and go through the active screening process but do not require COVID testing.      Residents who are able to complete these short term outings independently need to ensure they complete the Sign Out Book located just outside the nursing station on the counter.

  • Temporary Outing – Leaving the property and includes overnight of one or more nights. (applies only to fully vaccinated residents). For these overnight outings, the ministry requires an advanced approval process for these absences. All temporary outings must go through the Manager assigned to the Resident Home Area. This is the form to utilize.  Please note that upon residents return from an overnight outing, they must be isolated, have a PCR test and await the results. Upon receiving a negative result they can come out of isolation.

These Resident Home area extensions below will take you to the Charge Nurse who is the RPN on your persons floor. The RPN is a great person to connect with if you have questions related to medications, health status updates, or general resident centered information. The RN Team Leader extension is an option if you are having difficulty accessing your respective home area or have further concerns.
Manager Point of Contact
For general inquiries related to COVID restrictions, overnight absences or to send your vaccination information:
(For absences please contact the charge nurse as outlined above)
Soon you will be coming back into the Home and we thought it would be great if you could start putting some faces to names.

Personally, I have a huge interest in sports and sports nutrition. This led me to pursue a diploma in sports nutrition from the International Olympic Committee. You can usually find me doing some sort of sport or outdoor activity all year round!
Kristen Richmond, Food Service Supervisor

Hi! My name is Kristen Richmond and I have been at JMPC since the beginning of 2018. I am a Nutrition Manager, Food Services Supervisor here.

I have been in LTC for the past 9 years. I started my career in LTC as a dietary aide, then went on to working as a cook and then moved into a supervisory role in 2014. I love incorporating resident suggestions as well as residents own recipes into our regular menu cycle to enhance the dining experience at the Home.

I live locally and have 2 young boys who keep me very busy!
Mandatory Training Videos
Training videos are mandatory for you to watch prior to entering the building
A component of the Directives that the Ministry released includes a mandatory requirement for Homes to ensure that Essential Caregivers coming into the Home receive training on putting on and taking off PPE as well as training on effective hand washing. Below are the 2 video clips for you to view. You will be asked to confirm at the screening table that you have watched these 2 videos prior to entering.

Here are short video clips to resources that will help you to understand how to use PPE properly and how to effectively hand wash.

This training needs to be completed prior to your first visit and then monthly thereafter.

Infection Control from the desk of Emily Sarley
It is important to understand and recognize the impact of the heat and humidity on older adults when you come for an outdoor visit. You should not expect to have a lengthy visit and should definitely look to sit in a shaded location. We do have water easily available just inside the chapel doors – just ask the RSA, or as an essential caregiver you are able to get the resident a drink of water. Just inside the chapel door you will also find sunscreen.
Why does dehydration risk increase with age?
Water/ body ratio decreases with age
Cognitive impairment can result in forgetting to hydrate
With increased age, there is a decrease in thirst sense
Multiple medications may increase onset of dehydration

Best source of hydration is water.
Essential Caregiver Designation
The Ministry of Long Term Care updated visiting policy requires written documentation that supports the essential caregiver designation. As a result, we have created a PDF form that you can open electronically and fill in the blanks. There are a couple of options to return the form to us via email or fax. Alternatively, we will have hard copies of this document available with the screeners at JMPC where you can complete and drop off to them.

Essential Caregivers must submit this form to be approved as an essential caregiver prior to their visit in order to be permitted into the Home.

Should the resident/POA wish to change an essential caregiver, a new form will need to be submitted in advance.

Message from the Chair of Family Council
Questions brought forward to Gwen Babcock and answered by Angela Malcolm

Q. What are the benchmarks that must be reached before more restrictions can be reduced?

A. The level of precautions homes must implement related to social activities depends on whether they have immunization coverage rates of 85% of residents and 70% of employees fully immunized. As has been communicated not too long ago, the staff are just now starting to get their second immunization. (as are many essential caregivers) The definition of full immunization applies to the staff as well, meaning 14 days following their second dose. Once this benchmark has been obtained, essential caregivers will be able to engage in some activities with the residents, and enhanced freedom of movement in the Home. This continues to develop based on information from the Ministry.

Family Council is composed of family and friends of the residents of the John M. Parrot Centre and dedicated to the promotion and improvement of the health, welfare and happiness of all residents at the John M. Parrot Centre.
